If You Don't Pay Your Child Support You May Get "The Boot"

By:  Carole L. Chiamp

Custodial parents waiting for past due child support sometimes don’t see that money.  But now an amendment to expand the Michigan Support and Parenting Time Enforcement Act is changing that.  A metal device called the “boot” is placed on the offender’s auto wheel, rendering it inoperable.  The boot used to be used to collect for unpaid tickets and other auto-related infractions.  Now a good number of courts are using it to enforce child support orders.

Booting may be initiated by the court, a custodian parent or an attorney.  It has to be ordered by a court after a show cause hearing when the offender does not appear.  It works well because the only way to have the boot removed is to interact with the court and when that happens it ends up in immediate payment.
